Work With the Scientific Community—ACC
Work with the scientific community and researchers to better understand and evaluate the scope, origins and impact of and solutions to marine litter.
In 2010, ACC partnered with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to support the first federally funded research expedition to the North Atlantic gyre. Our support helped provide educational outreach for the research voyage. » view related video
In 2009, ACC helped support scientific research of Ocean Futures and their work on debris samples taken by Project Kaisei, a non-profit devoted to increasing understanding of the nature and scale of marine debris, its impact on our oceans, and solutions for prevention and clean-up. ACC continues to work with Project Kaisei leaders. » view related video
Through ACC, the plastics industry has partnered with NOAA to conduct ocean sampling that provided important data to help accurately assess plastics debris in the Pacific Ocean. These results, based on scientifically valid sampling techniques, are helping researchers and policy makers better understand the nature and sources of the problem and how it can be addressed. ACC continues to work with NOAA.
